FAQ's
(Frequently Asked Questions)
- How does it work?
Every 15 minutes a level sensor at the Outermost Harbor Marine monitors the
tide level and sends the level measurement to a computer that records the data.
Every 6 hours the computer processes the latest 36 hours of data and generates
the TideChart which it automatically uploads to the this Website -
www.telecamsystems.com/outermost
- How is it calibrated?
The precision level transducer is calibrated against a Tide Staff that was
surveyed in and installed by the Army Corps of Engineers in May,
2001
- How accurate is the real-time
tide measurement?
Since the TideMeter uses ACTUAL measurements at the
Outermost Harbor, it does the best job yet available in delivering tide levels
and times. During the of trials the tide meter has consistently shown that the
actual high and low tide levels at the Outermost Harbor are somewhat greater
than indicated in the tables. Also, noted were variations between actual
measured low and high tide times when compared to the tide
tables.
- Why are there differences
between the Tide Meter Measurements and the tide tables?
Tide tables
are based primarily on astronomical calculations, and cannot accommodate
changing weather and changing tidal flows due to siltation changes in channel
flow, etc.
- How reliable is the tide
predictor for projecting tides for the next 24 hours?
The tide
predictor looks at the tide trend over the past 36 hours and projects similar
behavior for the next 24 hours. Because it is based on actual measurements, it
is quite accurate in projecting levels and times for high and low
tides.
- Should I throw away my tide
tables and just use the TeleCAM Systems Real Time Tide Charts in planning my
boat trips out of Chatham Harbor?
Absolutely not! TeleCAM Systems
cannot warrant that the information provided is always accurate and always
available for your use. NOAA Tide Tables should be your final reference for
planning your boat trips.
- Well, how do I use the Real
Time Tide Charts?
The Real Time Tide Charts can be useful to augment
the information in the Tide Tables. It will allow you plan better in cases of
exceptionally high or low tides. It will provide offsets both in tide levels
and in times of high and low tides that may be helpful in extending your time
clamming at low tide, or in better judging when to return to avoid the lowest
point of low tide.
Finally, it can provide you with a quick reference
(via the internet) of the present tides and what the tides are projected to be
for the next 24 hours.
