fascinating aspect of the history of Chatham I'd be pleased to hear from them.

Mr Denk, The Stepping Stones facility may have been part of the Cape
Cod radar experiment in 1950 or thereabout that led to the formation of Lincoln
Laboratory and the computerized air-defense system.

Thanks Dan for that interesting story. I have indeed heard of that
house at the corner of sam ryder and old queen anne. I belive Dave Rogers grew
up in that house and I heard they for some reason or other had to board up one
of the bedrooms. Jared

Roger: It was an airforce radar installation in conjunction with MIT.
All the crew lived in the brick house next to the Gulf station which is now
Cumberland Farms. Some of the crew took post-graduate classes at Chatham High

Does anyone know the history of the apparent government facility was
that was formerly located on Stepping Stones Road in Chatham? At one time and
in some old Kelsey Air Views there appears to be a white radome there, and for
a while in the 90s there were remnants of a chain link fence and a small
building on the site. Now there is only a driveway, well-maintained, and a
vacant lot with two large boulders ar the rear. If it were numbered it would be
about 88 Stepping Stones Road. Thanks

Seeing Jack Crossman's name elicited several memories. One of the
more interesting characters that graced Chatham's shoreline, "Captain Springs"
was, and probably still is, a gentleman. He kept his vessels (PILOT, HILARY
ANN, CAPTAIN CARL, maybe others) neat as a pin, no easy task when making a
living using a wooden boat.

according to "Dead Reckoning" however, there are certain parts of Orleans that
are considered Eastham;much akin to certain parts of Harwich that are really
Chatham:ie Did Josh Nickerson live in Chatham or East Harwich? Is Weaquaset in
Harwich or Chatham? You and I know the real answers!:) smile!!Carol, and Steve, I
rather think that Jackie Crosman is still alive and well and living in
Sandwich, where he is married to a nice lady named Mary.As matter of fact, I
talked with Jackie this evening and he sends best to everyone. Hillary,Jennifer
and Erin are all doing well and with famlies of their own.Patty did pass on and
was living in Eastham(yes,Steve Eastham for sure).Jackie has giving up fishing
and lobstering, but is still putting in 40 hrs a week painting all at 76
yrs.**To Chris Holzner: Nora Hammond was one wonderful Lady, she lived two doors
up from me and told me many stories of both my Dad and Grandfather when they
were young. Her two grand-newphews,Paul and John Hammond still own the house
across the street where her brother Capt.Francis Hammond lived.Nice to see you
here and that you have a real contact with the Old Village.Jared, I shall get
you those copies of photos of the "Wicked One". My Mom took the one you see in

very much alive and lives in Eastham.I have some fine photographs of him that
my mother took over the years with my father and me all together. I would be
happy to give you some copies if you would like. They are candid shots and not
ones you would see at the Chatham Historical building. It would be nice for

Good morning! I found my uncle's obituary this morning, in the Cape
Cod Chronicle. My father was born on the cape on Seaview St. He says the house
is still there. I would like for anyone with any information on my family to
contact me, as my father and I plan a trip there to see some relatives. My
great-grandfather was Prince Harding Goodspeed, and my grandmother was Eliza
Jane Goodspeed Bloomer. My grandfather was Arthur E. Bloomer, Sr. and my father
is Arthur E. Bloomer, Jr. My great uncle Percy Goodspeed just died at home in
Chatham on April 3, 2002. My great aunt Helen Goodspeed still lives at the home
in Chatham. My grandmother always told me that I look just like her (my aunt
Helen) when she was younger.Anyone wanting to write with any information is
more than welcome, and I hope to hear something from someone very soon. We plan
a trip up there in the next few months, although I think the fall or winter
would be wonderful. Thank you for any information or communication at all!

Hilda, Hope I didn't insult you! I know you are a generation younger
than those two, but, if you look at the photo on page 100 of "Weathering A

in front of the old First National Store, with their coupons, waiting in line
to buy groceries. Reading back earlier on this CHATroom, you'll find an entry
from Diana Nickerson Lapham, saying that she thinks even SHE is in the photo!
And, CONGRATULATIONS on becoming a great-grandmother!! Ralph, you are certainly
right about Robert - his signs ARE all over town, and I even sent him a card
telling him how dare he spend time being sick!!! Your wife is very fortunate,
having a husband who loves to cook. I'll bet you are a wonderful one, too,

I try to read a little from the past on here each day and try to
think of new to add, It looks like the most part has been exhausted over the
last years, looks like we may have to get into more modern day activities or
even maybe get a neighboring town to participate. Lots of connecting memories
can be given about old aquiantances in Harwich for instance,Crowells,
Handlers,Marcellines,Galvines,Higgins just to name a few. one thing I haven't
heard mentioned is those red target shoots hauled by the war planes, they were
made of a very nice material, some of which were not available to civilians in
that period. One day my father and I found one in the bay that had been shot
off and had hundreds of feet of nice cable attached. There were steering cables
in lots of Chatham boats made from it.

Hey Tim, how have you been? I thought of you on Saturday as I drove
past your old house by the Lights. It looks like a small New Jersey subdivision
over there! I had my dad with me and had to slow to a snail's pace and do some
major rubber-necking to take it all in. It also looks like two houses were torn
down, I thought that would never happen in that neighborhood. My dad was
telling me stories about all of the houses he painted over the years as we
passed them along Bridge Street. He had a couple of good ones involving your
dad and Noble Cathcart, whose house he painted a few times. There certainly is
a lot of history along those streets and lanes, I really miss it. Best regards,

Hi Linda, thanks. I check this site from time to time lately but have
had little to say and less time to say it! I'll try and contribute more
frequently. Actually,I thought about e-mailing you and Betsy since you're both
long time residents of the great state of Maine. I'm planning a trip there this
summer with my family and was wondering if you'd mind recommending places to
visit and things to do. If you have a few minutes to send me info c/o my e-mail
address I'd really appreciate it. Jane, Johnny was a decent cook as was Phil.
Phil could also bake incredible desserts. He used to bake pies, cream puffs,
eclairs, etc.. My dad and Quido also hold their own in the kitchen. I had
considered becoming a chef even after working for Mary Hamilton at the
Cranberry Inn summers during highschool. I do most of the cooking at home,
although after my wife had our second child she commented that it was nice that
one of us still had time for a hobby! I tend to go for the most difficult food
preparation which keeps me at the market and in the kitchen for hours, even
whole weekends! I saw Robert at Quido and Alberta's last Saturday. He seems to
be doing well after his surgery. With all the signs he has around town I don't
see how he has time to be sick! Regards to all, Ralph

Good to see you back in the CHATham Room, Ralph. I had been missing
your stories... Does anyone else have memories of Miss Constance Ayer (we never
called her anything but Miss Ayer), who dressed in a wool coat, black hair net,
and horn rim glasses, used to walk from her house on Barcliff Avenue to the
Post Office twice EVERY day (this was in the late 50s and into the 60s). One
walk was to get the mail and the other was for exercise. I never saw her
anywhere else in town. Miss Ayer lived down the street from my Grammy Reb
Ryder, a few houses closer to the fish pier. She never mowed her "lawn" but had
a beautiful field of wild flowers. Guess she was ahead of her time with that
AND with the walking just for exercise. Welcome back from Florida, Uncle Dave
and Lorraine.

Jane, Pappy also had a pasta machine, one of the first commercial
pasta makers available back in the early 1930's. He made this wooden box for it
which contained the machine and many blades and attachments for making
different styles of maccheroni. Every Sunday he'd make fettuchine or linguine
with homemade sausage, chicken and a sauce which would simmer for hours. During
the week he'd prepare things like pasta è fagioli and bake loaves of
bread. Robert and Mike probably remember this, I think Johnny had the pasta
machine after Pappy passed away in 1973. I also remember traveling with my
family and Pappy and his pasta machine all over creation in the 50's, visiting
friends off-Cape where Pappy would prepare all types of things. He was a great
cook with a passion for feeding people. He also made great beer and wine.
Johnny and Jean introduced my mother to my father in the early 40's, after my
dad served in the Army Air Corp and was still living in Franklin, Mass. My
mother had never eaten Italian food before visiting Pappy in Franklin and he
taught her how to make many dishes. Ralph

Albert. I used to hear Jean and Johnnie speak often of him, but now, of course,
they aren't around to ask. Jean and the rest of the family used to refer to

Diane Nickerson: Maybe you should wait before you invest in the book
"Image of America- Chatham". It has a lot of interesting pictures but it has a
suprising amount of misinfomation as well. Such as your father's boat being
owned by Franny Jones and the Chatham Light keeper being Josiah Harding when it
was Josiah Hardy!! When Fox Island is viewed from the west Crow's Pond is not
on the right and Bassing Harbor on the left. Its Old Harbor on the left and

Diana, Some others in the picture besides Mary Ellis are Reliance
Olson; the lady with the goiter, cant think of her name, but Carol Kelley named
her fairly recently on here; and I wondered whether the lady standing next to
Reliance is Hilda Trains (IS it, Hilda?), and whether the young boy in the
extreme left might be Charlie Pelletier who was killed when the Chatham
Furniture van he was riding in turned over up in W. Harwich back in the late
40's...(?) My mother told me that she used to get up at 3:00 in the morning and
go down there and stand in line to get items with her coupons. Regards,

Depot St. Young was Orick, not Oren. At one time he had a boat moored
in the Oyster Pond, painted red. I'm not sure that it ever sailed. I hear that
it was nicknamed "LIGHTSHIP". Orick was a veteran of WW2 Murmansk runs, and
often spoke of visiting Scotland during those trips. He was, for me, a real
gentleman. He helped me learn how to mend "twine" when I was new to Scottish
Seining. I earlier had the pleasure of working alongside him (in either 1958 or
1959) aboard one of the Jones' trap boats. Others in the crew..Albert "Handler"
Young, Carroll "Cack" Young, Bill "Willy Dipnet" Farris, Warren "Tack" Young,
and Walter "Hungry" Young. Some of the good natured shenanigans they pulled
were downright funny...examples, lunchboxes nailed to the twineshed
floor...spikes put into makcerel so that the poor unsuspecting filleter would
ruin his knife, etc. Fran Jones, correct me if I'm wrong.

The Mr. Young on Depot Rd had a wife...named Mary....also a tall
woman....I remember she always wore the same elaborate braided hair style.
Might have attended daily mass at Holy Redeemer....It seems I remember her
being very faithful. Do you all remember the apartments over the brick block?
My gramma Lillian Eldredge (Donny Potato, Natalie) lived up there...to my
little kid legs the stairways were enormous to climb. A lady named 'Bash-be'?
lived across the hall from my gram....could she be Bathsheba... Elf's
mother/sister??? Also the Porter's and the Lucas's lived there at that time.
What kind of monthly rents would be typical 35 or 40 years ago??? I carried
many jugs of kerosene up those stairs to fuel my gram's oil heater. My gramma
would take me downstairs and Jane's mom and/or sister who ran the soda fountain
would make me a vanilla coke and a hot dog. I don't know if those spaces are
lived in now or not....would seem a shame to have them empty in light of the
current housing shortage. dan

One thing I remember about Elsie ( Charlie Deke's wife) was that she
must have bought all her shoes at rummage sales and they were always too small
- so she just cut the toes out to make more room. I think that's why she walked
the way she did - kinda funny - like her feet hurt. Steve Smith was certainly
one great person. Ron and I were involved in the Chatham Athletic Assoc when
our kids were in school. We took in ballplayers for several years and were very
faithful in attending the games. One of the years the all star game was played
at Fenway we took our kids and went up for the day. Steve was there to root for
the Cape League. I asked him if he was going to say a prayer for them and his
reply was, "hell no, I'm retired now - they're on their own." Typical Steve
remark. The other night we were sorta meandering down memory lane and talking
about some of the old homes that are no longer on Main Street and Nadja
Johnson's house came to mind. We called it Nadja purple. Remember it? She
really must have loved purple. I think it was right about where the liquor
store and the first Cumberland Farms store(now the pottery or glass blower's
shop)are. That was a nice house if you could get past the purple......

Hi Tim! You really started something!! Just to add to the
fun....."Red" Griswold, mechanic down at the Chatham Texaco Station in the
'60s....(wonder how I knew?) Loved his "cheer"...goodhearted..Allie Hunter,
lived on Mill Pond Road, lived to be one of Chatham's oldest
citizens..."Cowboy" Bill O'brien, who sang on WOCB wrote a song about him and
Chatham ...We have the record...Johnny Stello lived with him for years when he
first came to Chatham, and when he and my cousin, Jean, were first married,
they lived with him for awhile, and I used to go and visit. Mike "Pappy" Stello
was John's, Phil's, Ralph's, and Quido's dad...(one more brother, cant remember
his name)...short fellow with bald head. He lived down on Mill Pond with his
son's Phil and Ralph...he introduced me to homemade pizza!!- the first pizza I
ever set my teeth into...can remember it now, delicious, thick crust...In his
latter years he lived in a small house up off Stepping Stones Road. Mike, Rob
and Karen Stello's granddad(plus more cousins)Stello Cleverdon and her husband,
oh, god, my mind's a blank..whatever his first name was, used to live in an
apartment over what is now The Artful Hand on corner of Main St. and Mill Pd.
Road. My Aunt Dorothy and Uncle Kenneth Kendrick were very good friends of
theirs. Mr. Cleverdon always wore a huge-brimmed hat. After he passed away,
back in the early '50s, my father built a new house for Stella up on Seaview
Street. It was the next house on same side of street where Johnnie and Jean
lived. The house has been sold numerous times and been remodeled....Stella was
very soft-spoken, and, as I recall, always wore longish dresses and
hats....Remember going to their upstairs apartment with my mother to visit
them. And, last, but not least, let me add to Nancy's remarks about Steve
Smith, our Methodist minister, that he was certainly a great man who did enjoy
having fun with us all. My first trip ever to Boston was with him and the MYF
to Boston Garden to the rodeo when I was thirteen. He used to drive up to South
Chatham and pick up kids all along the way back down to Chatham on Wednesday
evenings to attend choir rehearsal. Does anyone remember Chet Cahoon's brother,
Pat, Stanley Gunderson, Freeman Ellis, Jimmy Allison, Margaret McBride, Joe
McBride.....??? How about those square dances at the South Chatham Village Hall
during the summers back in the early '50s? All for now.....Jane

Hi Diane Matteson Nickerson. I think the man you were referring to
that lived beside Beanie Eldridge was Oren Young. He use to wear heavy black
sunglasses all the time. Also, the guy that walked everywhere with the tall
wife was Charlie 'Deke'and his wife Elsie. Use to walk downtown to go grocery
shopping. She carried 2 shopping bags and he carried the newspaper. I remember
you as being the fastest female in the class of '57'. You could drive your
mother's Buick from Chatham to Orleans stoplight in 9 minutes flat. A feat I've

Info regards to sections of Chatham in years gone by. Northwest
Chatham or South Chatham; better known in years past as East Harwich. Along Rte
137 going towards E Harwich was the one house on the right past what is now the
Catholic church. The next building in the late 30's early 40's was Charlie
Chase (Harwich Machine Shop now for years). Alonzo Nickerson, (father of
Harwich Police Chief Conrad) Where the Country Store is (am not sure if that is
still the name of such) was Randolp Youngs store, for years the South Chatham
post office was located in there) I think cousin Don N wrote about the white
colored chocolates that he sold!!!! Coming back towards 28 was Mill Hill Road.
For many years the only houses in there was my grandfather's and ours, Josie D
as he was sometimes called had the Dairy farm. Later the Mill Hill Poultry Farm
was started. Further in was the old Bearse's house. Both of these houses were
built in the 1800. Please make any corrections to this.

OK, Tim....just have to add my two cents worth! SOPHIE SAUNDERS, pie
maker, baker, seller in South Chatham. In today's world, it is doubtful she
would pass Roberta Gough's Board of Health inspection! STEVE SMITH, beloved
Methodist minister....made religion fun for kids. Took our youth group (MYF)
places we might never have otherwise gone i.e. Boston Garden, Boston Marathon,
even to visit inmates in jail! Would turn the lights out at our meetings and
join us in games of "Spin the Bottle"! RICHIE HAMILTON, white painters pants by
day, Cranberry Inn helper at night. Married to Mary....mother to Janice, Judy,
Jane and June. Never missed a CHS basketball game! FRANKIE DILL, shuffling down
Old Harbor Road to Main Street, hands in pockets, to Eldredge's Garage where
court was held at the "hot stove club". BILL BALFOUR, lived down the street
from me and one Halloween my friend and I knocked on his door for a treat and
he came to the door with 2 rotten bananas in a basket, pleading with us not to
"trick" him! BURNELL HARDY (or was it Harty?), God love him....his mother had
to call me most every night for the homework assignment. His mind was on cars,
not school! CLARA CUSHING, owner of "Clara's" in South Chatham......cigarette
in mouth, working the grill, never skipping a beat while casting a sideling
glance at those waiting for food. Did she ever smile? Seldom! ALLIE GRIFFIN,
married to Elizabeth, mother to Wayne, Bob, Dick, Jim, Ginny and Joyce....fun
loving, musical, energetic! Always remember him from the fishermen's dances at
the Legion on School Street. REB RYDER, now there is not enough time or room to
tell about this lady. Born on the island of Nantucket, married to Richard E.
(Chief of Old Harbor Station), widowed young. Beloved mother (Richard Allen,
Arethusa, David, William and Emily), grandmother and great grandmother. Born in
1883 and died in 1988. Known for her strength, tenacity, cooking, friendship,
Nantucket sayings. One of my favorites was when you were pretty full of
yourself she would say "Well, you deserve a leather medal!" I loved it when she
baby sat us for we knew upon arriving home from school there would be a pan of
her famous "Hard Gingerbread" and we could eat all we wanted!Enough for now.

Tim Pennypacker, Thanks for the fond memories of my father, Kenneth

from Little Rock, and her husband, are now retired to the house on Stage Harbor
Rd.Thanks for fond memories. Thanks to others of you, I enjoy reading the
comments and love seeing the pictures.Am looking for an OLD town map of
Chatham. Can any on come up with one??Mid-early 1800s or before?? Happy Spring.

Then there was Lucy Doane - the lady with the huge goiter and her
brother Roy Speight who lived on Orleans Road where Braodreach is today. Next
door (in the back) lived Charlie and Lena Sparks. After Roy died they inherited
his house and could be seen nightly sitting on the front porch watching the
world go by. Earl and Ruth Baker lived in the house in front of Charlie and
Lena. "Bake" always had a cigar in his mouth and he loved tooting around his
yard in a broken down old tractor. We used to play cards with them and we would
watch the sun come up. I can't believe we actually stayed up all night playing
Canasta. They had no children - a parakeet was their child and boy oh boy could
that bird talk. Those four people would fall into the Chathamport "characters".
All very nice people though and we have fond memories of them. Our first house
was where the Liberty Commons sign is.

To all contributors....a message from the old gal again this morning.
If you want to locate old streets and people, you have to have a central
clearing house...I am willing to be such...will try to put this map together
using the different sections of town. It could get to be a little large, but
lets try it...send in your knowledge to this site and I will see what I can
do...this has to be people and streets where they lived. Anyone who has
corrections, can do so by sending them in to this site. Might be fun to try it.
Start off your contributions under the following headings: North Chatham:
Chathamport: Village: West Chatham: South Chatham: and Chatham central: and to
Tim Pennypacker...I knew most of the people you mentioned. While Harvey and I
were living in Florida...about 2 years ago..we did this by running down Main
Street from Lumpkin's to Mayflower in the 30's..unfortunately we entered it in
the Guestbook and I guess it is gone forever now. Send in your names and
streets and I will keep you informed as to what progress I make. I bet you all
see a difference in the traffic already. If I don't quit fooling around with
this E/M today, I will never get my bills paid!!!!Hilda

I remember Daisy Day...she always had a brand new car and I thought
what a bargain her used cars must be......she always drove around town at about
20 mph...and they couldn't have many miles on 'em either. Another name I
remember from that list is Jessie North.....I knew her when she lived with Ma
Haven and another lady in Harbor Coves. Mrs. Haven used to tell me she couldn't
walk, Jessie couldn't see, and the third lady couldn't hear. They got along
just great! Speaking of cars....who was the man who drove an old (red I think)
Corvair with a rusting out floor....every time I saw him he was sitting lower
and lower behind the wheel...any day I expected him to fall out from under the
car. dan

Tim, love the names! Daisy Day, who was a fixture at Munson Gallery
for many years, moved to Chatham with two of her fellow teachers from the Kent
School, Ms Hunt and Ms (the name escapes me)and lived two doors up from me on
Main Street until one of the ladies died and left the house to Horace McNab,
the shop teacher at the high school. While she lived there, Daisy carved and
painted birds which she sold from the front sunroom of her house. Then she
bought a house on Cedar Street where she lived with her mother. She was an
interesting person, knew everyone. We used to stop by the gallery just to chat
with her. Harold Brown had a bicycle shop on Main Street opposite Holway Street
and also sold whirligigs and beach toys. Roy Gurley's wife Doris was a good
friend of my mother and very active in the Eastern Star. I think they lived on
Highland Avenue and had a lovely flower garden. Gray Page also lived on
Highland Avenue across from the Catholic Church and was an accountant at Chase
Chevrolet. His wife Eleanor was the librarian and they had two children, my
good friend Judy and Stephen. Steve Smith was a very popular upbeat Methodist
minister. Luther Edwards lived on the corner of Silverleaf and Water Streets
and was a friend of my dad but I do not know what he did. I think Godfrey was
the Forgeron who lived on Kent Place off of Cross Street, had the shoe store,
and is the father of Charlotte, Annette, Sally, Joey. He came from Canada, Nova
Scotia, I believe. Lisa

Jane and Hilda. Thanks for your support, very much!! I lack a
comprehensible map of Chatham showing streets and land, etc. But I have two
suggestions? #1 Maybe we could all get together and come up with an "Old Time
Map" of maybe around 1940?? So many sites have vanished. The A&P next to
the Theatre, Slims & Freds garage,Acme Laundry and many more! #2 How about
that huge, old estate, which was located on Ryders Cove and on the entrance of
Crows Pond. Lots of stories there about the history of that place, for sure!!!
From Route 28, Don Nickerson lived just behind the Antique shop and the McLeans
lived next door to him. Thanks to the WEB, we can preserve some history, here.

people have written here on the CHATham Room, enjoying the stories to the

Can anyone name off the members of the Class of '49 that are in the
picture that is on page 100 in 'Weathering a Century of Change' It was taken in
front of the First National when it was on Main street. I remember how we used
to save old grease and turn it in at the store to receive saving stamps from
the store. That book is really an interesting one to read and catch up on the
events that took place in Chatham during the last century. If you haven't seen
it I think you will find it very interesting.

Dear Don, Please dont give up on the Chatroom....even though
sometimes noone comments on your entries, they are enjoyed. My mother has a
scrapbook which has a newspaper article about your mom raising the African
Violets with a picture of her. I remember going there with my parents and
seeing all of the lovely plants setting on stands around the living room, etc.
I, like Hilda, remember the antique shop on the corner with the fellow in the
stockade, but didn't remember what the sign said. Dont remember Freddie P.,
though. I guess North Chatham was too far back in those days for kids from West
Chatham to venture! I have heard my mother often speak and tell stories about
the Chatham Manor, which was where your house was. I think they held dance
marathons there. Keep the stories coming! Regards, Jane

It was a warm and sunny Saturday morning in Nov. and I was with my
father scalloping down in the bay. He said to me, " We do not have to hurry
today so you sit up there and open and fill that dinner bucket up. It is
christmas time coming and we can use some extra monies." So as asked I did just
that, I took out the thermos jug and filled both top and bottom. When closing it
some fell out and made a delicious snack. When we got to shore with our limit
Rolf Sylvan(Kathys dad)the then warden, was at the town landing nearby and
wandered over to check our catch. He counted out those ten bags and was
satisfied. You must remember in those days they were burlap and they had been
wet down loaded with rocks and hung up to stretch. you could get at least 5
buckets in them if not a little more. Anyhow my father put them on the rail and
I lugged them to the truck, he set the dinner bucket on the bow and when Mr.
Sylvan turned to walk back to landing I grabbed it and head up the shore with
it. Steps from the boat it broke open and some if not most of them fell on the
ground. Out of the boat my father jumped and threw dry seaweed over them, Later
we picked them up and washed them and all was fine, except! I kept hearing how I
could have gotten him fined, arrested or lost his license, ya!!!

I have the sign that was on the stocks, about him kissing his wife on
the sabbath, in my shop on Depot Road. Quite the worse for wear, and Donna
Lumpkin has a book with the picture the Conquest showing it. My old boss moved
the house in '46 to either the Plum estate on the Oyster Pond, or for the
Tappans, on Stage Neck. He was working on both places when I went to work for
him in the fall of '46. Bob

Dear Donny - You refer to "a bowling alley" as being near your home.
Do you mean the THE CHATHAM MANOR which was our only gym facility in those
days. It was used for basketball dances and roller skating. (Tibby Dubis met
Joe at that roller skating rink and wedding bells rang for them). The only
CHATHAM school building also used it for dances and basketball games. Our
girl's team won four championships in a row (that was back in the 30's) you are
probably too young to remember those days. We played all the towns on the Cape
and went to other towns in school buses..lots of necking going on in those
return trips. Fran Edwards and Willard Nickerson made use of those trips which
later led to wedding bells for them...so you see..life went on just as now only
at a SLOWER PACE!

Thanks Hilda! The sign on the stocks said the reason he was there
was because he was caught KISSING HIS WIFE ON THE SABBATH! SORRY you never
visited our house. My Mother kept it like a show place. Bruce and I were
forbidden to hang around the living room and Lord forbid if we touched or sat
in the purple chair!! Bruce failed to master the Grand Piano, which just sat
there for many years. Mom had many, prize winning African Violet plants in the
living & dining rooms and loved to dress in those colors. Many folks came
by to look at the plants. On the site at Adams Lane, at one time there was a
bowling alley. When the alley went out of business it was torn down and the
salvaged lumber was used to build the house. DON MACINTOSH

BOB CHAPIN AND I have tried to add old stuff to this room. together
we have many stories. So far we get almost no replys from anybody? So should we
continue??? Freddie P- Bunch of us kids were hanging around by the Antique shop
on Orleans Rd. & Crowell Rd. one day. We spotted Freddie westbound, heading
towards us with that huge horse drawn hay wagon. We waited until he had just
passed us and we all jumped onto the back for a free ride.Well our weight
caused the front of the wagon to rise and disconnect. So there goes Freddie
(who was very deaf) sitting on his seat on two wheels, like a harness racer. We
all vanished!!!! Wagon was left sitting on the road???? The same Antique shop
had a dummy in the stocks on their front lawn for many years. How many folks
can remember what the sign on the stocks said???? Don Macintosh
